Cotter Campground – Canberra :
Finding budget accommodation in and around Canberra is difficult at the best of times.
The recent ban on overnight stays around Lake Burley Griffin has impacted on mobile home owners finding low cost accommodation close to main tourist attractions.
Some of these attractions include Parliament House, The War Memorial, The National Gallery, Floriade, Questacon, The Australian Museum and The National Zoo and Aquarium.
The Cotter Campground (operated by the A.C.T. Department of Lands and Conservation) is located around 13 Km from Weston (around 25 Km South of the Canberra CBD) along the Cotter Rd South of Canberra situated along the banks of the Cotter River just upstream from it’s convergence with the Murrumbidgee River.
This campground represents the best value camping area closest to the Canberra CBD. Hot showers, serviced flushing toilets, a kitchen wash up area and free barbecue facilities are offered here for $12 per person per night or $8.00 per night if your have a government concession card.
Set in beautiful surroundings the campground is large with easy access for the largest motorhomes. Tent campers are provided with well grassed slightly sloping grounds for those wet days and plenty of space to spread out.
Town water is plumbed throughout the campground with plenty of access points and firewood can be purchased from the Rangers at $12.00 per bag for use in the metal surround wood barbecue facilities.
There are plenty of picnic tables spread throughout the campground and three undercover gas or electric barbecue areas are also provided.
There is no dump facility for motorhomes. The closest dump point is located around 30Km away on the Northern side of town at the Epic Showground where camping facilities are also provided at a much higher cost.
Several bush walks including the Cotter Caves Walk lead out from this campground along the river and there are plenty of water sport activities such as swimming, fishing and kayaking in the Cotter and nearby Murrumbidgee River.
The Cotter Road also leads further South to the Cotter Dam, The Tidbinbilla Tracking Station and The Tidbinbilla Reserve.
It is also a great place to start an adventure to the the Namadgi National Park and the historic Ororal Valley Tracking Station site (via the small town of Tharwa) or further afield to the Highlands of the Snowy Mountains and the Kosciusko National Park in South Eastern N.S.W.
If you are prepared to travel the Cotter Campground is great value accomodation within reasonable distance of the main attractions around Canberra.
