The Wild Horses of Kosciusko :
These photos were taken during the summer of 2015 in the Highlands of the Kosciusko National Park, N.S.W. Australia. The Black Stallion depicted here was part of a small herd of Brumby’s roaming wild throughout the picturesque Three Mile Dam area of Mount Selwyn, in the Kosciusko National Park.
There is much controversy and debate here in Australia surrounding the Wild Horses of Kosciusko.
The Australian Government plans to cull the herds on a regular basis in an effort to reduce the impact they have on the fragile alpine environment. The Brumby’s are steeped in Post Colonial Australian History, having been recruited by the Australian Army during WW1 to establish the First Australian Light Horse Brigade, famed for their daring assault at Beerasheba in the Middle East.
They have also been immortalized in Australia through Banjo Patterson’s poem – The Man From Snowy River, which describes the ruggedness of these animals and the toughness of the pioneering men and women who carved a living from the harsh environment of Australia’s High Country.
