WILD PLATYPUS – GALLERIES

Platypus are widely distributed along the East Coast of Australia from the temperate rivers of Tasmania through to the tropical fresh waters of Northern Queensland.
Although usually very shy animals it is possible to find the occasional animal that has aspirations of becoming a Hollywood film star.
Platypus belong to a unique group of mammals known as Monotremes. Compared to other mammals which give birth to live young, Monotremes lay eggs and suckle their young after they hatch. The Echidna is the only other Monotreme known to science and both these animals are unique to Australia.
