Strahan – Macquarie Harbour – West Coast – Tasmania – 2019
Strahan is the bustling hub of the West Coast of Tasmania, nestled on the shores of the sheltered waters within Macquarie Harbour.
Strahan is the starting point for the Macquarie Harbour and Gordon River Cruises, The Sarah Island Tours, Scenic Helicopter Flights over the rugged and wind swept West Coast and is home of the longest running theatre play in Australia, “The Ship That Never Was”.
This comical play, based on the true story of the escape of prisoners from Sarah Island during the colonial period and written by acclaimed Tasmanian playwright Richard Davey of the Round Earth Theatre Company, has been performed here in Strahan now for the past 25 Years making it the longest continuously running live theatre production in Australia.
Strahan is also home of the original timber getters from the Huon Pining days when huge logs were cut from West Coast forests and floated down the Harbour for stockpiling.
This unique timber was renowned for its quality as a boat building material and features in the daring escape of prisoners from the Penal Colony on Sarah Island located upstream on Macquarie Harbour.
I hope you enjoy these few snaps from Tassies West Coast – 2017 – 2019
